Cloud Tangle Dreaming Again

Remy Boccalatte, of False Peak Records, recently visited Glitter Records. He dropped off copies of Cloud Tangle‘s new album Dreaming Again, pressed on green eco-vinyl by Suitcase Records in Brisbane. False Peak had celebrated its sixth anniversary at Trinity Hall, a heritage church in Fortitude Valley a few days earlier. While Remy was at Glitter Records, I asked him if was open to discussing the story behind his label. He said yes.

The Birth of False Peak Records

Remy has been part of Brisbane’s vibrant D.I.Y. music scene for 20 years. In 2018, he founded False Peak Records based on his own experiences trying to release music. As an artist, he often sent his work to boutique labels outside Brisbane. This process felt disconnected, and Remy quickly realized he could handle it himself.

With this insight, he decided to start his own independent record label. Initially, False Peak released his music, along with collaborations and projects with his friends.  Over time, False Peak grew. In six years, it has released 27 records. These releases include acoustic folk, experimental, ambient, and electronic music.

Curating with Purpose

I asked Remy about the label’s approach to curation. In a recent conversation, John Russell from 4000 Records mentioned to me he might scale back his label’s broad focus. I shared this with Remy, who explained that he had worked with John to release Cloud Tangle’s album. Remy managed the LP, while John handled the cassette version.

Remy said he admired John’s community-driven vision. He explained that his focus was on curating music that fits False Peak’s distinct look, sound and feel. When signing new artists, he is searching for work that complements the label’s unique catalog. He values artists who release music regularly and tour frequently. Remy listens to many submissions, but he only works with music that resonates deeply with him. After making this connection he sees his role as helping the artist bring their vision to the world while allowing them to retain control over their creative processes.

Empowering Artists: Supporting Creative Freedom

Remy takes a hands-off approach when it comes to the creative and recording side of the music. His job is not to control the artist’s vision but to support them in achieving it. He handles certain aspects of the release process so artists can focus on making music. Remy sees his relationship with artists as a partnership. The artist’s success helps the label grow, and in turn, the label gives the artist a platform to reach new people.

Continuous Creative Growth: The Philosophy Behind the Name

The name False Peak reflects Remy’s belief that there is no ultimate “top” in music. The creative journey is ongoing. There’s always another step, another path to explore. For Remy, the process of creating and releasing music is continuous, with endless possibilities to discover. I mentioned that music with creative integrity may not enjoy the immediate highs of trend-driven work, but it often holds incredible value in the long run. Remy seemed intrigued.

A Commitment to Artistry: The Vision of False Peak Records

False Peak Records is focused on supporting artists and helping them bring their creative vision to life. It appears to me that Remy’s approach is built on trust and collaboration, empowering artists to maintain control over their work while facilitating their success. The name False Peak reflects his commitment to artistry, ongoing creative exploration, and the mutual growth of both the label and the artists it supports.

In the three years since opening Glitter Records, I’ve witnessed Brisbane’s experimental and DIY music scenes evolve dramatically. There’s a fresh surge of energy and innovation, evident in releases like Cloud Tangle’s Dreaming Again. I believe False Peak Records is well-positioned to capture much of this creative momentum. Remy’s focus on curating original music aligns perfectly with the exciting changes unfolding.
