Megan Thee Stallion returns to ‘Fever’ era form with ‘Thot Sh*t’

“The women that you accidentally tryna step on?” Megan Thee Stallion asks at the opening of ‘Thot Sh*t’. “They’re everybody that you depend on. They treat your diseases, they cook your meals, they haul your trash, they drive your ambulances, they guard you while you sleep. They control every part of your life. Do not f**k with them.”

Megan Thee Stallion is one of the best in the game

After dominating the charts in 2020 with ‘Savage’, ‘WAP’ and breakthrough debut album Good News, Megan Thee Stallion returns with new single ‘Thot Sh*t’. In one of her well publicized rants, Azealia Banks recently proclaimed Megan to be “a commodity.” Fans concerned that Megan might actually be becoming one – remember that Maroon 5 collaboration? – need not worry. While Good News took her to the dizzying heights of fame, this new single brings things back down to earth. Driven by a strong trap beat, the track hits hard from the get go. Paired its lyrical hook – “hands on my knees, shaking ass, on my thot shit” – Megan delivers what her fans are already calling their song of the summer.

Pop often borrows from trap. ‘Thot Sh*t’, in contrast, brings a rawer, truer trap sound to the mainstream. A slow BPM allows Megan’s flow to take the spotlight. If the world needed any further evidence, it highlights her as one of the best emcees in the game right now.

‘Thot Sh*t’ is a revenge fantasy

Lyrically Megan responds to the men and women envious of her spectacular rise to fame and widespread public acclaim. Her ongoing dispute with the man who shot her, Tory Lanez and former best friend Kelsey Nicole are chief among these. The song’s accompanying music video, however, specifically takes aim at internet trolls. In a move that is sure to spark controversy, Megan and her squad exact violent revenge on a politician. The reason? He leaves misogynistic hate comments online.

This revenge takes the form of hitting this man with a truck and conducting surgery to replace his mouth with female genitals. All the while their booties shake in time to beat. ‘Thot Sh*t’ is, after all, set in the same universe as ‘Hot Girl Summer’.

Like ‘WAP’, ‘Thot Shit’ uses hypersexual language as a form of female empowerment. It seeks to reclaim the terms men use as insults. Megan took to Twitter before the release of the song to address its meaning. “I’m really just talking sh*t and taking ownership of the words ‘thot’ and ‘hoe’,” she shared, “because they’re not the drag the men think it is when trying to come at women for doing them.

Final thoughts on Megan Thee Stallion

‘Thot Sh*t’ is a banger of a track. It shows just how much of a musical force Megan can be. After similar releases from artists such as Rico Nasty and Flo Milli, it is looking to be another defining year for female rappers. These women are part of new generation who are not afraid to express themselves through their work. They are turning the clichés of rap and pop music on their heads, while expanding their lyrics past what these genres have traditionally allowed. As a fan, I for one cannot wait to see what they will do. Then again, maybe I’m just caught up in all of the “bad bitch energy.”
