The recent closure of The Record Exchange in the city underscores the tough situation, especially for music retailers. My experience running Glitter Records in California Lane, as well as conversations with my neighbour Jessie Short who owns independent sticker and stationery store Stash World, highlights a hopeful approach to modern retail I believe can inspire others.

Fortitude Valley is known for its vibrant music scene and nightlife, making it a unique hub for Brisbane’s diverse subcultures. As a result, Glitter Records and Stash World attract customers looking for more than just a typical retail experience. Our focus on authenticity, paired with our support for lesser-known artists and niche products, sets us apart from conventional shops.

Both Glitter Records and Stash World emphasize curating unique products, which is key to our appeal. By stocking items that major retailers don’t carry, we give customers a reason to seek us out. She notes that Glitter Records offers music discovery and meaningful conversations, while Stash World offers hands-on exploration of stationery.

The Advantage of Hybrid Retail Models

Both Glitter Records and Stash World began as online businesses before opening physical locations. This approach worked to our advantage by allowing us to develop a deep understanding of our areas of focus before transitioning into physical retail. For Stash World, it meant starting small in a small but eye-catching space in Winn Lane before moving to a larger location at 707 Ann Street.

Glitter Records began when I was informed that my shared office Assembly on Wickham Street was ending its lease. During a lunchtime walk, I spotted a new “For Lease” sign on an attractive storefront in California Lane. I decided then it was now or never. Taking my chances I opened a physical record store.

I saw this as a great way to test the waters for a physical store. Signing the new lease, I was transparent with the family that owned the shop. I wasn’t sure it would work. I told them I might still use the space for trading records online if the shop idea didn’t take off. Fortunately, the response was positive. In two years Glitter Records has grown from a small venture with just 500 vinyl records to an internationally recognized record store with 4,000 records and 500 CDs, alongside an ever-expanding online inventory of over 15,000 items.

This hybrid approach has been essential in today’s retail climate. Even on days with slow foot traffic, I can still make online sales through platforms like Discogs and my website, glitterrecords.com.au. This combination of online and in-store sales allows me to reach a wider audience and maintain steady sales.

Looking ahead, I believe there will always be a place for shops that offer knowledge and hospitality. Our stores are a crucial touchpoint for customers to discover Glitter Records and Stash World. However, building a reputation in retail is an investment that takes time. And this is a luxury that CBD locations often deny new brands and businesses.

Ultimately, combining online and physical sales is essential for success. From my experience, Glitter Records’ growth online has been supported by connections within Fortitude Valley’s retail scene. Especially through exchanges with local customers, musicians and business owners like Jessie.
