However, it’s important to note that a “test pressing” like Tyler, The Creator’s isn’t an actual prototype. Instead, it is a limited pre-run designed to provide fans with a test pressing experience. Genuine test pressings are typically not released for commercial sale. Instead they are made in small batches, often fewer than ten, for quality control purposes before an album is released. Though many do eventually find a way onto the market. I even have some at Glitter Records.

As we can see with the Halo soundtracks, video game music remains one of the most fastest growing fields of record collecting. Similarly, releases like those from Owl City and Panic! at the Disco represent record collectors’ growing enthusiasm for 2000s-era acts.

Scarcity fuels excitement. Blood Records, who appears twice in our list, cleverly use social media and secret time-limited drops to increase the exclusivity of their pressings. Their releases, such as 12,000 sell-out run Chappell Roan’s The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess earlier this year, can disappear in an instant. This sense of urgency creates a feedback loop that amplifies perceived value of their records, often leading to even quicker sell-outs. A heightened sense of desire is an essential element of what drives people to seek out the most sough-after records.
