Vinyl detective anime Glitter Records Rare Records

Hi, I’m Riley, the owner of Glitter Records. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Swee Cheng Wong, a professional audiovisual conservator at the State Library of Queensland. Swee specializes in preserving culturally significant recordings, making her a trusted authority on preservation techniques. Our conversation provided me with invaluable insights into the proper care of vinyl records. Today, I’m excited to share her tips with you.

Essential Resources for Vinyl Conservation

Swee recommended a few key guides for preserving vinyl. One is the Phonodisc Collection ID Guide from the University of Illinois. It’s a great resource for identifying and caring for vinyl records. Another is the Library of Congress Record Preservation Guide, which offers excellent advice on how to keep records in the best condition. Lastly, she suggested the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives. This document covers both vinyl and other media types. Diving deeper into these guides can help you develop your own philosophy for curating and caring for your collection.

The Best Tools and Solutions to Clean Your Vinyl Records

When it comes to cleaning vinyl, Swee emphasizes the importance of using gentle tools and cleaning solutions. She recommended Tergitol and Disc Doctor cleaning solutions for optimal care. To get these, Swee suggests Decibel Hi-Fi, located in Esk, Queensland, just outside Brisbane. Owned by Brian Maddern, an internationally respected expert in hi-fi and recorded media, Decibel Hi-Fi is a trusted supplier for preservation needs. Brian also publishes a regular newsletter, making him a valuable local resource for anyone serious about audio.

Swee shared her experience with cleaning machines. “We’ve used a Loricraft machine for years,” she said. “It’s perfect for consistent, high-quality cleaning.” She also tested the Nitty Gritty brush and vacuum unit but found it overheated often, which led The State Library to switch to the Loricraft. Swee also shared that the eye-catching Microlight Record Cleaning Machine was another attractive option.

The Best Archival Sleeves for Protection

Proper storage is just as important as cleaning. For long-term protection, Swee recommends archival-quality inner and outer sleeves. Gaylord Archival Polyester LP Sleeves are top-tier options from the US However, because of the current exchange rates, she suggests Archival Survival’s inner sleeves as a more affordable choice. She also recommends Sleeve City’s Ultimate Outer sleeves for their affordability and fast shipping.

Protecting Record Labels

Swee suggests using record label protectors during cleaning. These protectors, available at Decibel HiFi, keep labels safe from moisture and cleaning chemicals. It’s a simple but essential step to ensure the best care for your vinyl.

Final Thoughts on How To Clean Your Vinyl Records

Swee’s advice shows that vinyl preservation requires consistent, thoughtful care. By using the right tools, guides, and storage options, you can help ensure your records stay in great shape for years to come.
